Responsorial Psalm
A sung response that follows the First Reading.
What happens
The psalmist or cantor sings the verses of the Psalm at the , while the whole congregation sits and listens, normally taking part by means of a response. The Psalm is ordinarily taken from the Lectionary.
Why it happens
The Responsorial Psalm is an integral part of the and holds great liturgical and pastoral importance, fostering meditation on the Word of God. It is preferably sung, at least as regards the people's response.
