Pater Noster
The Our Father, prayed aloud by the priest alone.
What happens
The priest introduces the Pater Noster ('Oremus: Praeceptis salutaribus moniti…') and prays it aloud, the server answering only the final petition ('Sed libera nos a malo'). The priest continues with the embolism (Libera nos, quaesumus…).
Why it happens
The Our Father forms the immediate preparation for Communion, asking for daily bread — understood preeminently as the Bread of the — and for the forgiveness needed to receive it worthily.
