The Baptism of Jesus
Matthew 3:13–17
John the Baptist baptizes Jesus, and the Holy Spirit descends like a dove.
The Story
Jesus came to the river Jordan where His cousin John was baptizing people who repented of their sins. John did not want to baptize Jesus — 'I need to be baptized by you!' — but Jesus insisted. When Jesus came up from the water, the heavens opened. The Holy Spirit came down like a dove and rested on Him. A voice from heaven said, 'This is my beloved Son; with him I am well pleased.'
The Lesson
At our baptism, God the Father calls us His beloved child. That is the deepest truth about who we are.
