Biography
St. Thomas, one of the Twelve Apostles, is best known for his initial doubt about the Resurrection. When the other Apostles told him they had seen the risen Lord, he declared: 'Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger into the nail marks and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.' A week later, Jesus appeared and invited Thomas to touch His wounds. Thomas responded with the greatest profession of faith in the Gospels: 'My Lord and my God!' (John 20:28). Jesus said: 'Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.' Thomas's doubt led to the deepest confession of faith. According to strong tradition, he traveled to India and founded the Christian community there — the 'Thomas Christians' of Kerala trace their faith directly to his mission. He was martyred near Madras (Chennai) around 72 AD.
