Biography
St. Raphael is one of the three archangels named in Sacred Scripture. His name means 'God heals,' and his story is told in the Book of Tobit. Disguised as a fellow traveler named Azariah, Raphael accompanies the young Tobias on a dangerous journey. Along the way, he helps Tobias catch a fish whose organs have healing properties, guides him to his future wife Sarah (freeing her from a demon that had killed her previous seven husbands), and ultimately heals Tobit's blindness. Only at the end does Raphael reveal his true identity: 'I am Raphael, one of the seven angels who stand before the Lord.' His story teaches us that God sends help — often in unexpected and unrecognized forms — and that angels are active participants in our lives. He is patron of travelers, the blind, nurses, physicians, pharmacists, and all who seek healing. He is also invoked by those seeking a good spouse, based on his role in uniting Tobias and Sarah.
