St. Polycarp

Bishop of Smyrna, Church Father

Feast Day: February 23

Biography

St. Polycarp (c. 69–155) was Bishop of Smyrna and one of the Apostolic Fathers — he had been personally taught by the Apostle John. His martyrdom, recorded in detail by his community, is one of the earliest and most inspiring accounts of Christian witness. At age 86, when told to curse Christ, he replied: 'Eighty-six years I have served Him, and He has done me no wrong. How can I blaspheme my King and my Savior?' The flames reportedly formed an arch around him without burning him, and he had to be killed by a dagger.

Prayer

St. Polycarp, faithful servant for eighty-six years, give me perseverance to serve Christ faithfully all my days. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Asking for Intercession

Catholics ask saints to pray with us and for us, as we ask friends on earth. St. Polycarp, who lives in God's presence, intercedes before His throne. Speak from your heart: “St. Polycarp, please pray for me…” You may also pray the prayer above or include this intention in your Rosary.
