Biography
St. Pius X (1835–1914), born Giuseppe Melchiorre Sarto, was Pope from 1903 to 1914. Known as 'the Pope of the Eucharist,' he lowered the age for First Holy Communion from twelve to the age of reason (about seven), dramatically increasing children's access to the Eucharist. He reformed the Roman Curia, codified canon law, reformed Church music (promoting Gregorian chant), and combated the heresy of Modernism. He died on August 20, 1914, shortly after the outbreak of World War I, reportedly heartbroken by the conflict. He was the first pope canonized since St. Pius V in the 16th century.
