St. Philomena

Biography
St. Philomena's relics were discovered in the Catacomb of Priscilla in Rome on May 24, 1802, accompanied by tiles bearing the inscription 'Peace be with you, Philomena' and symbols of martyrdom — an anchor, arrows, and a palm branch. Though her specific historical details are uncertain, devotion to her spread rapidly after numerous extraordinary miracles were attributed to her intercession. Most notably, St. John Vianney, the Curé of Ars, had an intense devotion to her, attributing virtually all of the miraculous cures that occurred in his parish to her intercession and calling her his 'dear little saint.' Pauline Jaricot, foundress of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, was miraculously cured of a terminal heart condition at Philomena's shrine in Mugnano, Italy. Pope Gregory XVI authorized her public veneration in 1837. Though her feast was removed from the universal calendar in 1961, she remains beloved by many faithful Catholics and her public veneration continues to be permitted.
