Biography
St. Nicholas (c. 270–343) was the Bishop of Myra in Lycia (modern-day Turkey). He is one of the most popular saints in both Eastern and Western Christianity. Famous for his generosity, the most well-known story tells of him secretly providing dowries for three poor sisters by throwing bags of gold through their window at night, saving them from destitution. He attended the Council of Nicaea in 325 and, according to tradition, was so zealous in defending orthodox doctrine that he slapped the heretic Arius. He was imprisoned during the persecutions of Diocletian but survived. His reputation for generosity, especially toward children, evolved over centuries into the figure of Santa Claus. His relics were translated to Bari, Italy, in 1087, where they remain.
