Biography
St. Mary Magdalene is one of the most important women in the New Testament. Jesus cast seven demons out of her (Luke 8:2), and she became one of His most faithful followers. She accompanied Jesus during His ministry, stood at the foot of the Cross when most of the Apostles had fled, and was the first person to see the risen Christ on Easter morning — He commissioned her to bring the news to the Apostles, earning her the title 'Apostle to the Apostles.' In 2016, Pope Francis elevated her feast to the rank of a liturgical feast (the same rank as the Apostles' feasts), recognizing her as an example of a true and authentic evangelizer. Note: The common identification of Mary Magdalene with the sinful woman who anointed Jesus's feet (Luke 7:36-50) and with Mary of Bethany is traditional in Western Christianity but is not confirmed in Scripture.
