St. Martin de Porres

Biography

St. Martin de Porres (1579–1639) was born in Lima, Peru, the illegitimate son of a Spanish nobleman and a freed Black slave. Discriminated against because of his mixed race, he was apprenticed to a barber-surgeon (the medical practitioners of the era). At age fifteen, he entered the Dominican priory as a lay helper, performing the most menial tasks. He eventually became a lay brother and was put in charge of the infirmary, where he cared for the sick with extraordinary compassion and skill. His charity extended far beyond the monastery — he distributed food daily to the poor, established an orphanage and foundling hospital for the children of Lima's slums, and cared for slaves brought from Africa. He was known for numerous mystical gifts including bilocation, aerial flight, miraculous healings, and the ability to communicate with animals. Despite frequent racial humiliation (even within the religious community), Martin responded only with humility and love. He would say: 'Everything, even sweeping, scraping vegetables, weeding a garden and waiting on the sick could be a prayer if it were offered to God.' He was canonized by Pope John XXIII in 1962.
