St. John Vianney

Biography

St. John Vianney (1786–1859), known as the Curé (parish priest) of Ars, is one of the most beloved priests in Catholic history and the patron saint of all parish priests. He nearly didn't become a priest at all — he struggled severely with his studies, particularly Latin, and failed his seminary examinations. He was ordained only through the persistent advocacy of his mentors, who recognized his exceptional holiness despite his academic limitations. Assigned to the tiny, neglected village of Ars (population 230), he transformed it completely through his personal holiness, powerful preaching, and extraordinary gifts in the confessional. Word of his sanctity spread, and soon people were traveling from across France to confess to him. He would hear confessions for twelve to sixteen hours a day — in winter starting at 1:00 AM. During the last years of his life, approximately 20,000 people visited Ars annually. He was frequently harassed by the devil, who would bang on the walls, overturn furniture, and taunt him during the night — Vianney calmly referred to the devil as 'the grappin' (the pitchfork) and took the disturbances as confirmation that his work was bearing fruit. He lived an austere life, eating barely enough to survive, sleeping only a few hours a night, and giving away virtually everything he received. He attempted to leave Ars several times, feeling unworthy, but was always persuaded to return.
