Biography
St. John of Kanty (1390–1473), also called John Cantius, was born on June 23, 1390, in Kęty, a small town in southern Poland. He studied at the University of Kraków, now the Jagiellonian University, and after earning his degrees was ordained a priest. For a time he directed the school of the canons regular at Miechów, and he later returned to the university, where he taught philosophy and theology, including many years as a professor of Sacred Scripture. For a period he was assigned as parish priest of Olkusz; fearing that he was not suited to the care of souls, he eventually returned to teaching. He copied many manuscripts by hand, some of which survive. John was known above all for his humility, his penance, and his love for the poor. He gave away nearly everything he had, and stories are told of him handing his cloak or his meal to a beggar. He is said to have made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem and to have walked to Rome several times. He died in Kraków on December 24, 1473, and was buried in St. Anne's Church, near the university. He was beatified in 1680 and canonized by Pope Clement XIII in 1767. He is one of the patrons of Poland and of the city of Kraków.
