Biography
St. John Bosco (1815–1888) was an Italian priest who is one of the most beloved saints associated with youth. Growing up in poverty, he worked his way through seminary by learning trades — juggling, acrobatics, tailoring, and carpentry. As a young priest in Turin, he was appalled by the plight of young boys working in factories and living on the streets. He began gathering them for catechism, recreation, and education, eventually founding the Salesians of Don Bosco and the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians. His educational philosophy — the 'Preventive System' — was based on reason, religion, and loving-kindness rather than punishment. He would say: 'It is not enough to love the young; they must know they are loved.' He established schools, workshops, and missions that spread worldwide. He was canonized in 1934.
