Biography
St. John, son of Zebedee and brother of James, was the youngest of the twelve Apostles and the one whom Jesus loved. He was part of the inner circle who witnessed the Transfiguration, the raising of Jairus's daughter, and the Agony in the Garden. He alone among the Apostles stood at the foot of the Cross, where Jesus entrusted Mary to his care. He authored the Fourth Gospel, three epistles, and the Book of Revelation. Tradition holds he was the only Apostle who was not martyred, though he was exiled to the island of Patmos. He died in Ephesus around 100 AD at a great age. His Gospel emphasizes the divinity of Christ and the commandment to love one another.
