Biography
St. Joachim is venerated as the father of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the grandfather of Jesus Christ. Like his wife St. Anne, he is known from early Christian tradition rather than canonical Scripture. According to the Protoevangelium of James, Joachim was a wealthy and devout man whose offerings at the Temple were rejected because of his childlessness — a deep humiliation in Jewish culture. He withdrew to the desert to fast and pray for forty days. An angel appeared to him there, announcing that his wife Anne would conceive a child who would be spoken of throughout the world. He returned to Jerusalem, met Anne at the Golden Gate, and their daughter Mary was born. Joachim represents the faithful father who trusts God even when circumstances bring shame and sorrow.
