St. Gabriel the Archangel

Biography
St. Gabriel is one of the three archangels named in Sacred Scripture. His name means 'Strength of God' or 'God is my strength.' In the Old Testament, Gabriel appears to the prophet Daniel to explain visions (Daniel 8:16, 9:21). In the New Testament, he announces the birth of John the Baptist to Zechariah in the Temple (Luke 1:11-20) and — in the most important announcement in human history — appears to the Virgin Mary at the Annunciation to tell her she has been chosen to be the Mother of God: 'Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you' (Luke 1:28). Catholic tradition considers Gabriel the patron of communications workers because of his role as God's messenger.

O Holy Archangel Gabriel, messenger of God, who announced the joyful news of the Incarnation to the Blessed Virgin Mary, help me to receive God's word with the same faith and openness as our Lady. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
