Biography
St. Francis de Sales (1567–1622) was the Bishop of Geneva during the height of the Protestant Reformation. Sent to re-evangelize the Chablais region, which had become almost entirely Calvinist, he succeeded in winning back tens of thousands of souls — not through debate or force, but through patient charity, door-to-door visits, and leaflets explaining Catholic teaching clearly and kindly. His approach was revolutionary: 'You can catch more flies with a spoonful of honey than with a hundred barrels of vinegar.' His masterpiece, Introduction to the Devout Life, teaches that holiness is possible for everyone in every state of life — not just monks and nuns. He co-founded the Order of the Visitation with St. Jane de Chantal. He was declared a Doctor of the Church in 1877 and named patron of writers and journalists by Pope Pius XI.
