Biography
St. Augustine of Canterbury (d. 604) was a Benedictine monk from Rome sent by Pope Gregory the Great in 596 to bring Christianity to the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Kent. Despite initial fear (he tried to turn back), he persevered and was received by King Ethelbert, whose wife Bertha was already a Christian. Augustine's gentle approach led to the king's conversion and the baptism of thousands. He established the Church in England with its seat at Canterbury, where he became the first Archbishop. His mission laid the foundation for English Christianity.
