Biography
St. Andrew was a fisherman from Bethsaida and a disciple of John the Baptist before becoming the first disciple called by Jesus. When he found Jesus, he immediately brought his brother Simon Peter. Andrew appears in several key Gospel moments, including the multiplication of loaves (he found the boy with five loaves and two fish) and the visit of the Greeks who wanted to see Jesus. After Pentecost, tradition says he preached in Greece, Asia Minor, and along the Black Sea. He was martyred in Patras, Greece, crucified on an X-shaped cross (now called St. Andrew's Cross) because he felt unworthy to be crucified on the same type of cross as Christ.
