Biography
St. Ambrose (c. 339–397) was one of the most influential figures of the early Church. As governor of Aemilia-Liguria, he went to the cathedral of Milan to keep order during the contentious election of a new bishop — and was himself acclaimed bishop by the crowd, even though he was still a catechumen (unbaptized). After attempting to flee, he accepted, was baptized, ordained, and consecrated within a week. He became one of the greatest bishops in Church history, known for his brilliant preaching, his defense of orthodoxy against Arianism, his promotion of sacred music (Ambrosian chant), and his courageous confrontation of Emperor Theodosius after the massacre at Thessalonica. His preaching was instrumental in the conversion of St. Augustine. Declared a Doctor of the Church.
