Universal Prayer (Prayer of the Faithful)
The faithful exercise their baptismal priesthood by praying for all.
What happens
The priest introduces the prayer from the chair; intentions — normally for the Church, civil authorities, those burdened by various needs, and the local community — are announced from the or another suitable place. The priest concludes with a prayer.
Why it happens
In the Universal Prayer, the people, exercising their priestly function, intercede for all humanity. It is a response to the Word of God just received in faith, by which the people offer prayers for the salvation of all.
