Rite of Peace
The faithful implore peace for the Church and one another.
What happens
The priest prays for peace and unity in the Church, greets the people ('The peace of the Lord be with you always'), and invites them to exchange a sign of peace in keeping with local custom. The deacon or priest may give the invitation.
Why it happens
By the Rite of Peace the Church entreats peace and unity for herself and for the whole human family, and the faithful express ecclesial communion and mutual charity before communicating in the Sacrament.
