Gloria
The angelic hymn, prayed at the middle of the altar.
What happens
When prescribed, the priest returns to the middle of the altar and intones the Gloria, which he then recites (or sings at High Mass) with hands joined, bowing at the appropriate phrases. It is omitted in Advent, Lent, and Masses for the Dead.
Why it happens
The Gloria is the 'Hymn of the Angels' joined to the Church's praise, glorifying the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Its omission in penitential seasons underscores the fasting character of those times.
