Epistle
A reading from the Old Testament or an Apostolic Letter.
What happens
The priest (or subdeacon at Solemn Mass) reads the Epistle at the Epistle side of the altar. The reading is taken from the Old Testament, Acts, or the Apostolic Letters, according to the day's proper. The server responds, 'Deo gratias.'
Why it happens
The Epistle proclaims the Word of God in apostolic or prophetic form, preparing the hearts of the faithful for the proclamation of the Gospel that follows.
