Saint Agnes

Agnes was a beautiful young Christian girl in Rome — only about twelve or thirteen years old. She loved Jesus with all her heart and had promised Him she would never marry anyone but Him. Wealthy Roman young men wanted to marry her, and she refused them all. They were angry and reported her to the Roman governor for being a Christian — because being a Christian was against the law back then. The governor tried to scare her. He showed her fire and swords. But Agnes was not afraid. She said, 'Jesus is my only spouse.' Finally, the governor had her killed. She was so young — a child — but she was ready to give everything to Jesus. She is one of the most loved saints in all of Rome. Her name is even mentioned in the Mass. Her symbol is a little lamb, because 'Agnes' sounds like the Latin word for 'lamb.'
